You know the ones. The holiday themed grazing boards, the decorations, the elaborate parties&#8230;all the things to create holiday and birthday magic and make the rest of us normal parents feel inadequate. Well, recently I saw one video that has actually stuck with me. This dad talked about writing a simple letter to your child on their birthday. This could include whatever you want, simple questions you ask your child or a summary of their year. I thought this was such a great, thoughtful birthday tradition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, here&#8217;s a little call to action for you too. Every year on your child&#8217;s birthday &#8211; handwrite or type up a simple letter to them. It won&#8217;t take you too long. I just did one for my oldest. His birthday was last month and I think it took me about 20 minutes. I&#8217;m literally just going to start a Google Doc. I&#8217;ll add to it every year. Then when he turns 18 or when he graduates high school, I&#8217;ll have them all printed and give them to him.  It will be fun for both of us to look back and see year to year how things change for him. I didn&#8217;t do a series of questions. I just thought about what his last year has looked like and typed up a little summary for him. A recap of his 5th year. To give you an idea, I&#8217;ll share what his 5th year letter looks like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Birthday Tradition: A Yearly Letter <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Hi Ben,&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>You turned 5 this year. We can\u2019t believe it. You are growing so fast. You are no longer our little baby, your face is less round, your voice keeps changing, you are getting so tall and you are learning so much.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>This was a big year for you. Right after you turned 4, we made our big move from Michigan to Texas. You have settled into our routine with school at PSE (Preschool Enrichment) in pre-K right by Mom\u2019s clinic. You played basketball with new friends and you had your first tee-ball season.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Your teachers at school love you, they are impressed by how smart you are, how well you listen and how sweet you are to the other kids. We love hearing about how you are doing. You are figuring out your letters and are working on sight words. I bet you will be reading before your birthday next year. You also love to count. You can almost count to 100!&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Lately, yours and your brother\u2019s favorite routine is to watch a movie or a show in the morning before school while you eat breakfast and drink your milk. Currently your favorite movies are: Mario, Spider-Man (really any of them), The Nightmare Before Christmas, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and for a while you really liked the Puss in Boots movie. You usually ask us if you can have a new toy from whatever movie you are into that week. We\u2019ve collected a lot of different figurines this year!&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Basketball earlier this year (January) was fun to watch. You were the smallest on your team but we could tell you wanted to practice and get better. You worked on dribbling and tried to shoot it on the 8 foot hoop.<\/em> <em>Basketball will start again in another month (November) and I\u2019m excited to see how much you have progressed even since January!&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Tee-ball has been similar. You played fall ball this year and we quickly realized that you were playing with mostly kindergarteners and first graders! But, you are learning to watch the ball &#8211; you have made some good stops at shortstop and second base. You also have been doing great at hitting the ball! Often you hit the ball from the coach&#8217;s pitch and you don\u2019t even need to use the tee. We think you have some great hand eye coordination<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lifeisamother.space\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/IMG_5434-copy.heic?w=750&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-548\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Our 5 year old baseball player <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>You are also starting to get more into golf. We have been giving you wiffle balls in the yard and it\u2019s so fun to watch you practice your swing. I see a lot of family golf in our future!&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>We also were lucky enough to take 2 family trips this year. We spent a week in South Carolina on vacation. And we went back to Michigan to see our family. You are so fun to travel with. You have also learned to swim this year! We spent a lot of time in our neighborhood pool and by the end of the summer you were full blown swimming. Watching your progression and confidence in the water develop was so fun for us! <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>You are such an amazing big brother Ben. Noah is so dang lucky to have you. I have watched you this year really blossom with this role. You are so sweet and patient with him. I often see you teaching him things, including him in all of your pretend play and sharing your toys. The two of you are sharing a room now and it\u2019s so fun to hear your chatter and giggles before bedtime.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>We love you so much Ben. Here\u2019s to another year of growth and learning. We can\u2019t wait to see what year 6 brings!&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Love,&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Mom and Dad<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What do you think?
