I\u2019m in my early thirties – from a professional standpoint, I have not had any time off from education \/ training \/ work since I was 5. Haha, in all seriousness though, I went straight from undergraduate work to medical school to residency. For any readers not in medicine, this has looked like 4 years of college, 4 years of medical school, and 3 years of training in family medicine accumulating a lot of student debt along the way.\u00a0 If I could go back, would I do it all again? To be honest, the jury is still out. For any of you considering a career in medicine – think long and hard about the financial implications. It\u2019s not only a time commitment but a financial one as well. More to come on this.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I always knew I wanted to do something in health care. In college, I considered several options before ultimately deciding to pursue medical school. At first I thought pharmacy (too boring – no offense to all of you pharmacists!), then optometry (no thank you, too much physics) and then landed on medicine. Once in medical school, I considered multiple specialties briefly but ultimately always came back to primary care. To break it down, really you have to think about surgical versus non-surgical specialty first. I really didn\u2019t enjoy any time in the operating room (I have tons of respect for those of you that do it!). From there, then it\u2019s inpatient (hospital) or outpatient (clinic). I found I always enjoyed my clinic rotations when I was in training. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
As a family medicine doctor I am privileged enough to be able to see entire families. I have some with whom I see the baby, older siblings, mom, dad and grandparents. I am able to foster meaningful relationships with patients and talk about preventative medicine. This truly has allowed for pretty awesome job satisfaction. Okay, maybe I\u2019ll take back the part about being unsure if I would do it all over again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
From a personal standpoint – I am happily married, going on 6 years to my husband who I have known for over 10 years. Unlike me, he\u2019s not in medicine. I think this has helped significantly with my management of work-life balance. We met when I was just a junior in college – still deciding about medical school. He\u2019s been with me through it all. We have moved now, 3 times together, from a rental house, to an apartment, to 2 homes that we have owned. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Together, we have two sweet boys who are 3.5 and 1. Our oldest was born when I was in my residency training and our second once I was working in my first job out of training. We are truly in the thick of it – all the crazy chaos that comes with raising toddlers. We recently decided to add to the chaos with a boy golden retriever puppy. Still trying to figure out what we were thinking with that decision! But overall I would say it\u2019s a good amount of chaos and I feel so lucky to be surrounded by these 3, now 4 boys.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I definitely don\u2019t claim to be an expert in any of it but I hope my experiences, musings and stories can be of value to you and we can tackle our crazy lives together.
